Santa Rosa Junior College fashion students strutted their stuff Sunday in a show exploring how the styles of decades past are far from passé, but are reflected in the contemporary looks of today.

The two shows at Santa Rosa Plaza drew hundreds of onlookers who cheered the students as they crossed the catwalk in styles that evoked the fun-loving flappers of the 1920s, to the peace-loving Bohemians of the 1960s to the couldn’t-care-less look of 1990s grunge.

Fashion instructor Robyn Spencer-Crompton said the show, called Reflections, allowed students to showcase the styles of various eras, understand their historical and social context, and help them identify echoes of those periods in current fashions.

Spencer-Crompton said her students often could recognize certain styles, but knew little about their origins. Students might be attracted to the fabrics or patterns of Bohemian style, for example, but not know its roots were from the 1960s, she said.

“In their minds, it’s a really contemporary look,” Spencer-Crompton said. Student Hannah “Barnett, 20, of Clearlake was one of the models in the show. She started making her own clothes about four years ago because her long legs made finding outfits that fit her well a challenge, she said.

“Now being able to make pants that fit me is like a dream come true,” said Barnett, who hopes to pursue a career in fashion design.

Another student and model, 20-year-old Chandler Lucy, slouched across like the runway like it was the last place in the world he wanted to be. He wore mostly drab, oversized clothes and gazed out into space with a mixture of ennui and disdain.

“That’s just a look,” he said later.

He said he was going for the “heroin chic” look that some of the hottest designers in the country crave.
