Deep in the Berkshires, Housewares and High Fashion

The town of Great Barrington, nestled in the Berkshires in Massachusetts, has long been a popular weekend destination because of its picturesque setting and proximity to many cultural attractions like the Tanglewood summer music festival. But the area also has a vibrant year-round community of residents, some of them former New Yorkers who have opened a mix of eclectic stores selling everything from housewares to high fashion. Most of the shopping is concentrated on Main Street with a few spots tucked away nearby.

Church Street Trading Co. and Hillary Rush Berkshires

A former Los Angeles boutique owner and stylist, Hillary Rush took over her father’s two-decade-old clothing store three years ago and refined its women’s and men’s wear to reflect her fashion sense. She stocks the 2,000-square-foot, wood-paneled space with brands like Eileen Fisher and the more cutting-edge Nili Lotan and Vince. She also carries under-the-radar brands like 360 Sweater and Gant Rugger. Prices from $20.

A live music space and restaurant serving classic American fare, this family venture also has a small bakery where the owner’s 29-year-old daughter, Kaitlin Stafford, sells her line of 30 popular oversize cookies. Her renditions include a banana chocolate walnut sandwich with Kahlúa buttercream and a mint-infused sugar version with a cucumber cream. Customers can pick up a wrapped cookie or eat it in the black-walled space which, with its beaded curtains and multicolored string lighting, has a hippie-ish vibe. Prices from $2.49.

Cyril & Dayne

This stylish eyewear shop is the dream realized of Dayne Kelly and Cyril Dray, business and real-life partners, who worked in the optical industry in Manhattan for more than two decades. Their creations, all handmade in Italy and France, include options like the rectangular blue tortoise shades with multicolored Swarovski crystals for women and a more classic pair with a matte wood finish for men. Prices from $285.

McTeigue & McClelland

Housed in a 19th-century former church, this showroom for handcrafted precious jewels is operated by two former New Yorkers, Walter McTeigue, a certified gemologist, and Tim McClelland, a longtime jewelry designer. The pieces are more classic than trend-setting and are heavy on diamonds, sapphires and other gemstones. Among the nature-inspired creations are a blue enamel bangle with a diamond-embellished vine motif and a gold pine cone pendant. Prices from $1,000.
